About the Farrar Award
The Farrar Award is presented in honor of Ronald T. and Gayla D. Farrar.
Farrar was a historian who served as a professor and interim dean in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications. His journalistic career included working as a reporter for the Arkansas Democrat in Little Rock during the Civil Rights Movement. His wife, Gayla, an English teacher, helped him support international students in the J-School, especially during holidays away from home.
Recipients of the award receive a plaque and a $1,000 prize.
The winning scholarship is presented in a featured address at the Media & Civil Rights History Symposium held at the University of South Carolina School of Journalism and Mass Communications.
