Why did you choose the University of Carolina?
I originally started at Midlands Technical College for two years before transferring
to USC. As a local, I’ve always known that I would be attending USC, as it was my
dream school to attend.
Why did you end up choosing information science as your major?
I chose the Information Science program because I thought it would match well with
my skillset in IT and library experience.
What are you doing now that you have graduated?
I am currently a customer service specialist for the Sandhills location of Richland
Library, a library system that I have been involved with since I was nine years old.
As a specialist, I help customers find and check out books within the library and
organize programs for patrons to attend that show inclusivity and equitability. I
am also the branch’s tech contact to attend meetings for tech updates throughout the
library system, and schedule tech appointments for patrons to have 1-on-1 tutoring
sessions for basic computer issues.
What do you most enjoy about your job?
What I like most about my current position is the creative liberties we are given
in terms of programs and ideas to improve the patron experience. We have a variety
of different activities and programs for patrons of all backgrounds to enjoy and learn.
What skills did you learn in the BSIS program that you use in your job?
While working in a library, we have patrons that are working on projects where they
need credible resources. While going through the BSIS program, we spend a lot of time
working with databases. The two ends meet when we educate patrons on how to use databases
and filter down results to find the accurate sources that are needed.
Do you have any study strategies or advice that you could share with current or future
students?
My best advice is to go into anything you are interested in with curiosity. Curiosity
will maintain interest and can be a great motivator to keep going. Yes, it can be
tough at times, but if you remain curious then it means that you are still dedicated
and motivated. Don’t forget to look in between the lines.
What would you say to high school students or people who are just starting their college
career who might want to follow a path like yours?
Information Science is a place for all interests, as it prepares you for a broad spectrum
of careers possibilities. It may not sound exciting, but it is when you get hands on experience that the excitement begins.
Not only that, but it is an important field to be in, as information is everywhere,
and it is important that we have valid and accurate information.
Do you have a favorite memory?
When I walked across the stage and became an alumnus, having completed the journey
that I had been picturing ever since I was little and overcoming the boundaries. That
is when I knew I was a part of something that I would hold close to me for the rest
of my life.
