Why did you choose USC Rice School of Law?
I chose to attend the South Carolina Rice School of Law because of its strong reputation for producing skilled and adaptable lawyers, its focus on hands-on learning through clinics and externships, and the collaborative atmosphere that encourages intellectual growth. The school’s commitment to public service and its proximity to both government and business hubs in Columbia offers unique opportunities for networking and professional development. Additionally, the diverse student body and supportive faculty create an environment that fosters personal and professional growth.
What’s your favorite thing(s) about Columbia?
One of my favorite things about Columbia is how it blends Southern charm with urban energy. The food scene is incredible, especially with spots like Rosewood and local barbecue joints that really capture the flavors of the South. As the capital of South Carolina, it has a unique mix of history and modernity, from the State House to the vibrant downtown. Gamecock football brings the whole city together, and the electric atmosphere at Williams-Brice Stadium is something special. It’s a place that really feels like home—full of pride, community, and good food!
What surprised you most about law school?
What surprised me most about law school was how much of it is about learning to think critically rather than just memorizing rules. The reading load is intense, but it’s the constant challenge of analyzing complex problems from different angles that really caught me off guard. I also didn’t expect how collaborative the environment would be—while law school has a reputation for being competitive, many students are willing to help each other out. Lastly, I didn’t realize how much it would stretch my time management skills; balancing classes, assignments, and personal life was definitely a bigger challenge than I anticipated.
What is an accomplishment in law school that you are very proud of?
One accomplishment I’m incredibly proud of is being selected for the USC Mock Trial team and placing in the semifinals during my very first competition in New York City. It was an intense experience, but it really pushed me to sharpen my skills and work closely with a talented team. Competing at such a high level was a huge confidence booster and showed me how far I’ve come since starting law school. Being able to hold my own in that environment and representing my school on felt like a major milestone in my legal journey.
