The Pro Bono Clinic helps South Carolinians who are navigating civil legal matters
without an attorney. Many individuals face legal challenges but cannot afford full
representation or are unable to secure counsel for their case. Through short-term,
limited-scope legal assistance, the clinic helps self-represented litigants better
understand their rights and obligations, navigate court procedures, evaluate legal
options, prepare legal documents, and identify practical next steps. By providing
targeted legal guidance and support, the clinic seeks to expand access to justice
and empower clients to more effectively represent themselves. The clinic does not provide full representation or handle criminal matters.
This is a volunteer-supported clinic. Attorneys, paralegals, and law students are
encouraged to sign up here.
How We Help
Our clinic assists individuals who are representing themselves in civil legal matters
by providing:
Legal information and guidance about court procedures
Advice regarding rights, obligations, and legal options
Assistance reviewing or completing court forms and other legal documents
Help preparing for hearings, mediations, or other court appearances
Referrals to legal aid organizations, attorney referral services, and community resources
Limited drafting assistance when appropriate
Our goal is to help clients effectively advocate for themselves and move their cases
forward with greater confidence and understanding.
The clinic is not a substitute for hiring an attorney. Unless specifically agreed
otherwise, clinic volunteers do not:
Enter an appearance in court
Provide ongoing representation
Attend hearings on a client's behalf
Handle criminal cases
Take over management of a case from start to finish
Instead, we provide focused assistance that helps individuals navigate the legal system
on their own.
The clinic is designed primarily for individuals who:
Are handling a civil legal matter without an attorney
Need guidance about a specific legal issue or court process
Would benefit from limited legal assistance rather than full representation
If your matter requires ongoing representation, we may be able to refer you to other
legal service providers.
Please note the Pro Bono Clinic is closed for the summer break and is not accepting
new cases at this time.
