Get Involved

If you are interested in becoming involved with WHiCC as an undergraduate research assistant (RA), please complete the online application and review the material below. Applications will be reviewed before the start of each semester. If there is an opening, you may be contacted for a brief in-person interview.

If you are interested in becoming involved with WHiCC as a graduate member, please send an email to both co-directors with your CV and areas of interest. Graduate applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis. If there is an opening, you may be contacted for an in-person interview.

WHiCC operates under a collaborative, multi-project model. At any given time, there are multiple ongoing research projects within the collective, which may be led by one or both of the directors. We engage qualitative and quantitative approaches in addition to theoretical work. This approach allows our mentees to learn about all stages of the research process and scientific method, and to gain experience with diverse methodologies.

Students will be required to complete weekly research hours, with tasks to be assigned by the directors. Students will also be required to attend a monthly collective meeting. Meetings are used to discuss research tasks and projects, troubleshoot any issues, and to engage in academic discussions about relevant work as well as professional development.

The longer students work in the lab, the more skills they will have the opportunity to develop. Undergraduate RAs may engage in tasks such as the following:

  • Literature searching and reviewing
  • Designing and testing online surveys using Qualtrics software
  • Data wrangling and basic statistical analysis
  • Qualitative data analysis
  • Participant recruitment
  • Conducting semi-structured interviews
  • Providing feedback on research products (manuscripts, presentations)

More senior RAs and graduate members may engage in tasks such as:

  • Survey design
  • Drafting presentations
  • Travelling to present research at national and international conferences
  • Manuscript writing and publication
  • Research project development
  • Independent Study
  • 499 research option
  • Honors projects

Students must make a minimum 2-semester commitment to the lab. Preference will be given to WGST majors and minors. Students will be expected to have taken courses in WGST or related disciplines (e.g., AFAM) and to demonstrate a commitment to thinking critically about health equity.

Senior RAs and graduate members may be afforded the opportunity to present at conferences or publish work conducted with the collective in academic journals.

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
