The Department of Anthropology congratulates Dr. Jennifer Reynolds, professor of anthropology and professor in the Linguistics Program at the University of South Carolina, on the publication of her latest article in the Journal of Sociolinguistics.

Her article, “The Shadow Presence of U.S. Models of Parental Involvement in Postcolonial Multilingual Language and Literacy Reforms in Western Highland Mayan Rural School Districts in Guatemala,” draws on Reynolds’ expertise in linguistic anthropology and longstanding research in Guatemala.

Through a critical language socialization lens, Reynolds examines how U.S. bilateral aid and international development efforts influence multilingual language and literacy education reforms in rural Western Highland Mayan Indigenous communities. The article also offers a multimodal approach to engaged research and explores how outside models of parental involvement can shape local educational practices.
