Joseph F. Rice School of Law

Zaria Cameron

What’s your favorite thing about USC Rice School of Law?

My favorite thing about South Carolina Law is the family environment amongst the students. Before coming into law school, I often heard the stereotype that law school was competitive and not very close knit, however, here at South Carolina Law the friends I have made have become my home away from home. I have also been able to gain meaningful mentor-mentee relationships with the Professors here at the law school which has made me more comfortable in classroom environments.

What’s your favorite thing about Columbia?

My favorite thing about Columbia is the culture of the city. I grew up in a small town very different from Columbia and moving here has allowed me to expand and grow. I also love how the city is large so whether you want to experience the city life and visit shops at Vista Union or hike along the Congaree River there are activities available for everyone.

What advice do you have for current students?

My advice to current students would be to stay consistent and disciplined in your academics but don't forget your physical and mental health. If your physical and mental health is not a priority, then it could affect your studies. You are not alone in this journey because your classmates are having similar experiences and your professors have also experienced law school as well. Finally, always remember your "why" as it will keep you motivated throughout the journey.

What would your dream job be?

My dream job is to be a criminal defense attorney to advocate for justice and fairness within the legal system. I have always had a passion for criminal law, specifically defending those accused. I have seen how the justice system isn't applied fairly to everyone accused of a crime and how individuals just do not have access to resources that they need. I want to be able to be the voice for those people and fight for them when they may not have a voice of their own.
