Introduction to Web Systems

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to modern web development, covering the principles, technologies, and best practices used to design, develop, and maintain professional websites and web applications. Students will learn to create standards-compliant web pages using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP while applying responsive design, accessibility, and usability principles. The course also introduces user interface prototyping with Figma, version control and website publishing using GitHub and GitHub Pages, and website management through a Content Management System (CMS). By the end of the course, students will be able to design, develop, evaluate, and publish accessible, responsive, and interactive websites that meet current industry standards.

Learning Objectives/Outcomes

 On successful completion of this class, students will be able to:  

 •       Explain the foundational principles and technologies that support modern web systems.
•       Read, write, and interpret basic HTML.
•       Apply web design principles to create multi-page websites.
•       Evaluate websites using industry best practices.
•       Develop a user interface with a prototyping tool such as Figma
•       Utilize correct HTML code in the creation and modification of websites
•       Use CSS to style and format web pages.
•       Validate and correct websites to meet current accessibility standards
•       Develop and test accessible, responsive mobile web applications
•       Use GitHub and GitHub Pages for version control, collaboration, and website publishing.
•       Evaluate and improve website usability. 
•       Develop interactive web pages using JavaScript.
•       Develop server-side web applications using PHP.
•       Create and manage websites using a Content Management System (CMS).
