ITEC 101 offers a broad introduction to the dynamic field of information technology. Students will explore the various computing disciplines, distinguishing their roles and applications across industries. The course covers the role of information technology in carees, industry-recognized certifications, and foundational computing skills essential for success in more advanced coursework.
Through real-world examples and interactive discussions, students examine the ethical, social, and global implications of technology, including the responsibilities of IT professionals. The course also delves into the impact of emerging, disruptive, and converging technologies, providing insight into current trends and the future landscape of IT.
Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Explain the relationships, similarities, and differences with the information technology discipline and related computing disciplines defined by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)
- Identify characteristics of industries, IT careers, IT positions, and IT certifications and how they are impacted by technology.
- Analyze how information technology impacts the globalization of world economy, culture, political systems, health, security, warfare, etc.
- Develop basic computing skills to use technology in personal and professional environments.
- Develop basic business and technical communications as well as critical thinking skills to be able to communicate effectively in a variety of professional contexts including group communication and written reports.
- Define and explain the impact of emerging, disruptive, and converging technologies on transforming industries and organizations within competitive environments.
- Explain why ethical and social responsibility challenges are unique to the IT professional and why ethics and social responsibility are important in IT.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of technology ethics, values, and social responsibility (VESR) when examining different kinds of social and personal values, analyzing ways in which social and personal values are manifested in communities as well as individual lives.
